Looking to the East one will see towering mountain at Sidemen village in distance, extensive rice field at Klungkung regency and unhampered sea view of the south coast of Klungkung.

The elderly people of Pesaban village told, the name of Bukit Jambul known at the time of the Dutch colonization given by visitors visiting the place. "Bukit Jambul" derived from the hill (Bukit) located on the South of the main road to the direction to Besakih from Klungkung, on top of which a temple is located named Pucak Sari Temple surrounded by dense big trees while on the slope is rice - paddy field, so from the distance the hill top with the temple surrounded by dense big trees will be seen like "Jambul" (bunch of hair on the front head/ tuft).

Pucak Sari Temple itself is an "Ulun Carik" temple (temple of farming) adhered by local farmers.

Before the name "Bukit Jambul" was given, the rice field on the Southern part was called "Babakan Kelod" while the farm and rice field on the northern part was called: "Babakan Kaja". Since the time the hill with forest on its top was noticed, that place was then called: "Bukit Jambul".

As you know Julia Roberts is making a new movie in Bali. There is another big event in Bali. The WTA has announced the field for the Bali ‘International Series’ Championships. The CommonwealthBank Tournament of Champions 2009 will be held on November 4-8 '2009 at The Westin Resort Nusa Dua, Bali.

Bali always ready to welcome celebrity. The tournament this year will feature top Tour players, who will compete $600,000 in prize money and an opportunity to earn a $1 million bonus.

This sport event was originally held in Surabaya on the year of 1994, at that time named Wismilak Open, then changed into Wismilak International the following year. On 2001 the tournament moved to Bali. Since Commonwealth Bank then became the main sponsor of the event, it is called Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic. After two years now the title changes to Commonwealth Bank Tournament of Champions

Among the winners of 2009 International Tournaments, 10 highest ranked players who are not participating in the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha this week are qualified for Bali Commonwealthbank Tournament of Champions.

They will be joined by 2 wild cards to be nominated by the tournament owner or WTA. The 12 participants will be divided into four groups of three players to compete in round-robin singles format.

The winners of the groups will play in single elimination semi-finals for the places in the final.

The Academy Award winner is filming part of her new film in the market town, Ubud, Bali. A local production company in Bali’s capital Denpasar reportedly held a casting session to pick about 100 local actors for the movie, which lasted two days. Shooting will be held in Kuta, Ubud, Banjar Bentuyung, Uluwtu, etc., places in Bali from October 15 to November 11. Bali is a truly paradise.

The actress, 41, is starring in upcoming movie Eat, Pray, Love with Javier Bardem. Based on Pushcart Prize winner Elizabeth Gilbert’s spirituality/travel memoir (played by Roberts), “Eat, Pray, Love” is about her self-discovery and soul-searching after her nasty divorce, exploring through India, Italy, and Bali.

The story is about the divorcee spent a year travelling and battling deep depression on what became a journey of self-discovery. After revelling in cuisine in Italy and exploring spirituality in India ashram (hermitage), she will find a balance between worldly pleasures and divine ascendancy in Bali where she will study with a ninth-generation medicine man and immerse in a love affair.

Aimed at a release in 2011 and directed by Ryan Murphy (Nip/Tuck); “Eat, Pray, Love” also stars Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men), Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), Viola Davis (Doubt), Billy Crudup (Almost Famous), James Franco (Pineapple Express), Luca Argentero (Lezioni di cioccolato), etc.

GALUNGAN DAY

There are many holiday in Bali. Bali has many traditional holidays. Balinese calendars, with illustrations for each day indicating what activities that day are auspicious for, are popular souvenirs. Apart from the everyday Western calendar, the Balinese also use two local calendars, the saka and the wuku calendar. The wuku calendar is used to determine festival dates. The calendar uses 10 different weeks, each from one to 10 days and all running simultaneously.

The Galungan festival, Bali's major feast, is held throughout the island and is an annual event in the wuku year. This occurs once in every 210 days in the Balinese cycle of days, Galungan marks the beginning of the most important recurring religious ceremony that is celebrated by all Balinese at the same time.

During this ten day period all the gods, including the supreme deity Sanghyang Widi, come down to earth for the festivities. Barongs prance from temple to temple and village to village.

During the Galungan period the deified ancestors of the family descend to their former homes. They must be suitably entertained and welcomed, and prayers and offerings must be made for them. Those families who have ancestors that have not yet been cremated, but are still buried in the village cemetery, must make offerings at the graves.

Although Galungan falls on a Wednesday, most Balinese will begin their Galungan ‘holiday’ the day before, where the family is seen to be busily preparing offerings and cooking for the next day.

While the women of the household have been busy for days before creating beautifully woven ‘banten‘ (offerings made from young coconut fronds), the men of our village usually wake up well before dawn to join with their neighbours to slaughter a pig unlucky enough to be chosen to help celebrate this occasion.

Then the finely diced pork is mashed to a pulp with a grinding stone, and moulded onto sate sticks that have been already prepared by whittling small sticks of bamboo. Chickens may also be chosen from the collection of free-range chickens that roam around the house compound. Delicate combinations of various vegetables, herbs and spices are also prepared by the men to make up a selection of ‘lawar‘dishes.

While much of this cooking is for use in the offerings to be made at the family temple, by mid-morning, once all the cooking is done, it is time for the first of a series of satisfying feasts from what has been prepared. While the women continue to be kept busy with the preparations of the many offerings to be made at the family temple on the day of Galungan, the men also have another job to do this day, once the cooking is finished. A long bamboo pole, or ‘penjor‘, is made to decorate the entrance to the family compound. By late Tuesday afternoon all over Bali the visitor can see these decorative poles creating a very festive atmosphere in the street.

On Wednesday, the day of Galungan, one will find that most Balinese will try to return to their own ancestral home at some stage during the day, even if they work in another part of the island. This is a very special day for families, where offerings are made to God and to the family ancestors who have come back to rest at this time in their family temple. As well as the family temple, visits are made to the village temple with offerings as well, and to the homes of other families who may have helped the family in some way over the past six months.

The day after Galungan is a time for a holiday, visiting friends, maybe taking the opportunity to head for the mountains for a picnic. Everyone is still seen to be in their ‘Sunday best’ as they take to the streets to enjoy the festive spirit that Galungan brings to Bali.

The last and most important day of the ten day festival is called Kuningan. Hindu saka calendar is a lunar cycle that more closely follows our own year in terms of the length of the year.

Tari Pendet: A Truly Dance from Bali

Bali is unique because of the art, culture, people, religion, custom, temple, houses, agriculture, landscape and other aspects. You must go to Bali to learn and feel a real Bali. One of the Balinese arts is Pendet Dance.

Traditional Balinese dances are the oldest form of performing arts in Bali. Traditional dances can be divided into two types, sacred dance called Wali and entertainment dance called Bebalihan.

Tari Pendet or Pendet dance is the presentation of an offering in the form of a ritual dance. Unlike the exhibition dances that demand arduous training, Pendet may be danced by everyone: male and female pemangkus, women and girls of the village. It is taught simply by imitation and is seldom practiced in the banjars. Younger girls follow the movements of the elder women who recognize their responsibility in setting a good example. As a religious dance, Pendet is usually performed during temple ceremonies.

All dancers carry in their right hand a small offering of incense, cakes, water vessels, or flower formations. With these they dance from shrine to shrine within the temple. Pendet may be performed intermittently throughout the day and late into the night during temple feasts.

Pendet is a real traditional Balinese dance, in which offerings are made to purify the temple or theatre as a prelude to ceremonies or other dances. Pendet is typically performed by young girls, carrying bowls of flower petals, handfuls of which are cast into the air at various times in the dance.

Pendet can be thought of as a dance of greeting, to welcome the audience and invite spirits to enjoy a performance.

Pendet actually has simple dance movements. These movements are the basic dance movements of Balinese dance. Pendet has undergone later development with variations and now is not only performed in ritual ceremonies but also in some social events. Pendet since has been known as a welcoming dance.
